A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is the digital equivalent of a handwritten signature or a stamped seal, but far more secure. It is an electronic document that proves the identity of the holder and is used to sign digital documents legally.

In India, DSCs are issued by licensed Certifying Authorities (CAs) approved by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). They are legally valid under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

In simple words: A DSC is a digital ID card that lets you sign documents and authenticate your identity on government portals like GST, MCA, Income Tax, DGFT, and e-tender platforms — all online, without any physical paperwork.

How Does a Digital Signature Work?

A DSC uses Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology — a system of two mathematically linked keys:

When you sign a document with your DSC, a unique digital fingerprint (hash) of that document is encrypted with your private key. Anyone can verify the signature using your public key — confirming that the document is genuine and hasn't been tampered with.

Who Needs a Digital Signature Certificate?

DSCs are mandatory or required for a wide range of individuals and entities in India:

Signing vs. Encryption — What's the Difference?

Signing: Used to digitally sign forms and documents to prove your identity. This is what most people need for GST, MCA, Income Tax, and EPF filings.

Encryption: Used to encrypt communications between your browser and a server. Required by specific portals (like ICEGATE, GEM, e-tendering platforms) that mandate secure encrypted transmission in addition to signing.

A Combo DSC includes both signing and encryption in one certificate, making it more versatile.

What is a USB Token & Do I Need One?

A USB token (also called a crypto token or hardware security module) is a small USB device that securely stores your DSC's private key. Your private key never leaves the token, making it extremely secure.

Common USB tokens in India:

Both are CCA approved and available from Bizgroww at ₹590 (incl. GST). If you already have a token from a previous DSC, you can reuse it.

How Long is a DSC Valid?

DSCs are available with validity of 1 year, 2 years, or 3 years. A 2-year DSC offers the best value for most users. You can renew your DSC before or after it expires — the renewal process is identical to a fresh application.

Is a Digital Signature Legally Valid in India?

Yes. Digital signatures issued by CCA-licensed Certifying Authorities are legally valid under Section 3 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. They carry the same legal weight as a handwritten signature on a physical document and are accepted by all central and state government portals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my DSC on multiple portals?

Yes. A Class 3 DSC can be used across all government portals that accept it — GST, MCA, Income Tax, EPF, e-tendering, and more — using the same USB token.

What happens if I lose my USB token?

Contact us immediately. Your old DSC must be revoked and a new DSC issued. The private key on a lost token cannot be transferred, so a fresh DSC on a new token is the correct procedure.

Can I get a DSC without an Aadhaar card?

Aadhaar eKYC is the fastest and most common method. For those without Aadhaar, video KYC or physical KYC options are available through the CA. Contact us for guidance.
